Economic Growth Region 3 Analysis
EGR 3 is in northeast Indiana on the borders of Ohio and Michigan.
The region is home to many rivers and lakes, such as the mighty Wabash, Maumee, St. Joseph and St. Mary’s rivers. Numerous lakes traverse through LaGrange, Noble, and Steuben counties. Wabash and Huntington counties are also home of the Salamonie River State Forest.
EGR 3’s population center is Fort Wayne, the second-most populous city in Indiana. The region’s industry base is centered on manufacturing and health care. The Parkview and Lutheran hospital networks have a foothold in each county in the region. The health care industry is supported by medical device manufacturing in Allen and Whitley counties.
Entertainment and education are significant in the region. Fort Wayne is home to the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, where the Mad Ants (the Pacers G-League affiliate) and the Komets (a minor league hockey team) call home. The region’s educational institutions include Trine University, Taylor University, Purdue–Fort Wayne, Huntington University, Indiana Wesleyan University, University of St. Francis, and Manchester University. The region’s top employers include the Parkview and Lutheran hospital systems, L3Harris and GM Fort Wayne.
